Not only can it change, it doesn't even have to be continuous from the start to the project end. Intermediate milestones and contractual obligations can create driving paths to & from these milestones, that may themselves represent critical paths.
Is the critical path different to what you expected? Perhaps it's time to review the schedule logic & durations — or it's time to change your expectation!
